Getting help

Someone can refer you, with your permission

What happens after you apply

  1. You or a helper send the Meals on Wheels form online, or call Sourcewise.

    The program or provider

  2. A nutrition coordinator calls to ask about your health, daily tasks and kitchen. A caregiver can help answer.

The program or providerA helper can help with thisWithin 1 business day of your request.

  3. Sourcewise decides if you qualify. You must be 60 or older, live in the county, and have trouble leaving home. You must need help with 2 or more daily tasks, like bathing, or have memory problems. You must live alone, or with a spouse who also has trouble leaving home.

  4. Meals come once a week, on the same day, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Someone must be home to take them. A neighbor can take them if you arrange it ahead. Meals come frozen. Sourcewise can lend you a microwave. The menu is set and cannot change for special diets.

The program or providerA helper can help with thisAs soon as 5 to 7 days after the intake call.

  5. Staff visit your home to confirm you qualify. Meals can stop if you do not. With a neighborhood meal provider, this visit comes before meals start.

What only you can do

  • Talk with the nutrition coordinator, or have your caregiver help.
  • Let staff visit your home to check that you qualify.
  • Be home for each delivery, or arrange for a neighbor to take your meals.
  • Give 48 hours' notice to pause or cancel a delivery.
  • Show ID if staff ask to check your age.
How long it takes
About 1 to 2 weeks from your request, if there is no waitlist.
You are enrolled when
You are enrolled when your first weekly delivery arrives. It is final after the home visit confirms you qualify.
To keep it
Staff check in every 3 months by phone or visit. They visit your home at least once a year. A pause of more than 3 weeks in a row ends service. Two missed deliveries can also end it. If service ends, you get a letter and can file a complaint. Sourcewise suggests $3 a day by check. You are never turned away for not giving.

Can’t be combined with

Coming changes

  • Starting January 1, 2027: Starting January 1, 2027, people without a qualifying immigration status leave Medi-Cal health plans. They can no longer get meals through a plan.
